SPUD InvoiceWe’ve started using Small Potatoes Urban Delivery (SPUD) to reduce our carbon footprint by shopping for food as locally as possible. SPUD specializes in delivering local and organic groceries in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Seattle. They have a great online selection and the ability to create standing orders so you no longer have to think about the basics. It’s also helping to get a better handle on our finances as we know how much we want to spend and can create orders that fit our budget.

One of the most excellent parts of their service is their invoice. How can I possibly be excited to get the invoice? It has a column called distance which indicates how far the each line item traveled to reach their warehouse!

Our biggest offenders of the week:

  1. Native Forest Coconut Milk: 13390 km
  2. Ginger: 8000 km
  3. Carrots, Celery, Cauliflower, Garlic, Peppers: 1500 km
  4. Chard, Onions, Turnips: 900 km

This is such excellent information! We now know where to focus our efforts in the garden to have the largest impact in reducing our food related C02 impact. We can now make informed choices about what we are willing to go without or find alternatives for. I love coconut milk but it’s got to go. Ginger can be grown here in pots if the plants are moved indoors for the winter season. All the vegetables in the above list are already part of the garden or can be easily incorporated. Chard and carrots can even be grown here throughout the winter with a little covering.
